Valentine’s Day Card Scramble

February 14, 2016: I’ve been so busy this weekend with work and projects that I conveniently pushed the thought of Valentine’s Day to the back of my mind. Although I knew it fell on a Sunday, leaving me plenty of weekend time to plan a special card or little offering for Bruce, I continued to procrastinate. I eventually talked myself into believing that Sunday evening would be more than acceptable for presenting a little sometime for my sweetie.

Well, to my surprise, a big, bright red envelope was lying on my laptop this morning. Gulp.

Feeling shameful, I opened the envelope, read the card and grinned in delight. My camera-shy guy bought me a camera selfie theme card!

Beaming, I tell Bruce how much I love this card! He laughed and said the he wanted to add a personal note on the back of the pop-up phone, but couldn’t figure out how to do it, so he scribbled on the side.

Now I’m even more dazzled. My guy thought of a way to give my card a unique, personal touch, but didn’t know how to DIY it! That’s phenomenal. Grinning I took the card over to my crafting headquarters to work a little DIY magic.

So here’s the message that was supposed to be displayed on the pop-up phone (but instead found its way to the side of the card.

A little gold foil chevron card stock.

A quick fold (to match the fold of the pop-up phone.

Some black tag card stock (or construction paper), cut slightly smaller and folded to layer on top.

Personal “Thank You Sweetie” note.

Some crafters double sided tape.

I present my thank you message to Bruce (and let him know sheepishly that I owe him a card).

My belated Valentine’s Day card for “B”:  People have asked me how I come up with card ideas so quickly. Thinking about it, I realized that I have become quite good at thinking up card ideas on the fly. Earle and Lauren’s baby shower card and envelope comes to mind. But in every case, I think on my feet when it comes to a card design because I have to. And in the case of Bruce’s slightly overdue Valentine’s Day card, desperate times call for desperate measures.

Which means digging deep into my craft supply stash.

For Bruce’s card, I’m going with decorated paper banner and a black circle monogram on the front. A classic never goes out of style, my friends.

I’ve been waiting to use the pink, red, beige a gold chevron paper in a project. Today is the only day that this becomes appropriate for a Bruce DIY. I cut a 2 inch strip of paper. And cut two short 8 inch pieces for a banner on both the front and back of the card.

I used crafters double sided tape to affix the paper strips to the envelope.

  
I added a strip of Little B gold foil diagonal striped tape.

Added a black 1.5 ” circle to the middle of the banner using crafters tape.

I then dug into my sticker stash and found these big cork letter stickers. Nice neural color with a clean crisp fine. Perfect for Bruce.

Gotta have hearts. I pulled out the Fiskars heart punch and made a few pink and red ones.

To create a layered, 3-D heart, I folded one in half and then attached it to another heart using the crafters tape.

The outside of the card front coming along nicely.  Now for the inside.

Cut some black construction paper to add as inside card liners.
  

Used a white gel pen (which is starting to fade on me…blast those pens!). The effect of white penned script on a black (or other dark) background really makes the message pop.

I added a couple of decorative paper circles I had in my stash to the penned note using Crafters tape. NOTE: This is why I cut and punch my paper shapes whenever I have free idle time.  You never know when those circles, diamonds, or hexagons come in handy as decorating embellishments.

And, with run-on letters, I added a “Love” on one circle and my initial on the other.

I placed the card on Bruce’s computer, then got back to my other important mission of the day (Cooking an amazing Valentine’s Day dinner).

So now Bruce has (and loves) his card. And both cards have earned their spots on our den floating shelf.
